Communities App
A platform for communities to organize, coordinate, and grow together.
The story
Why does this initiative exist?
Communities is an app that helps groups of people organize around shared goals, coordinate activities, and manage collective life together.
The world they want to see
Imagine a world where people who are profoundly different from one another don't just get along - they thrive together. Instead of power politics, where public discourse is mobilized to persuade others of the rightness of one's path, and in truth to control one another, the community focuses on cooperation around the basic needs of life. Imagine a society where individual initiative flourishes in complete freedom, where people devote their energy to fulfilling one another's needs, and rely on one another to fulfill their own. Imagine law that does not seek to rule, but to define the boundaries of morality - so as to enable this cooperation, without anyone treading on another. Imagine a thriving community as a living social organism, with a community currency that flows like blood through the human body and gives life to the social body. Communities is not just another tool for shared social organizing - it is a tool that supports a new developmental path for humanity.
What isn't working today
Existing community-organizing tools - almost without exception - are built on the same underlying assumption: that if we just listen to each other politely and argue well enough, we can persuade whoever thinks differently, and arrive together at "the right decision." That assumption is wrong at the root. Not because people are irrational, but because every rational system rests on foundational assumptions - and the assumptions that shape each person's worldview are buried deep inside them, inaccessible even to themselves, and differ fundamentally from person to person. Alongside this, in the real world: many democracies worldwide are under growing strain, and polarization between people who think differently keeps deepening. Paradoxically, ever since the invention of the internet - a tool that gave everyone nearly unlimited access to discourse, information, and communication - hatred between sides has only grown, not shrunk. If more discourse, more information, and more "opportunity to understand the other side" were the solution, it would already have happened. Something in the basic structure needs a real change of direction.
What they want to change
